Artist's Comments

Love is Simple.
Kat Vedah

This series initially started with my need for humour and whimsy during a trying time in my life, but it evolved into an exploration of romantic relationships, or rather, the ‘idea’ of such relationships. The series was my way of distilling such experiences (mine as well as others) in order to process and understand them in a more objective way.

I use stick figures to express people and relational experiences in order to turn them into something more symbolic, stripped down and essential. I find that stick figures have a quality of light humour about them and are quite accessible to most people, and yet they can be very direct and intense in what they depict. The medium of ‘cartoons’ has allowed me to address and explore the often raw and personal aspects of relationships without being immediately caught up in (or put off by) the emotional turbulence behind them.

On first sight, these cartoons may have a simple and comedic quality about them, but looking closer, they may elicit something darker, revealing and complex.
