Artist's Statement
CONVERGENCE Series:
My first
series of hybrid drawings started with a sink drain. I used the
image of the open drain as a metaphor for the black hole of the
unknown as well as the transitory nature of life. Over time, my
(somewhat morbid) subject matter and my use of materials changed, but
the image of the circle remained. I became obsessed with rendering
circular forms and began my research into the psychological aspects of
the mandala and its ability to create a sense of focus, stability and
unity within a viewers mind. It was then that the circles began to
change from dark holes (that absorbed everything around them) to
radiating cellular structures and living suns. And just as I thought I
couldnt take the circle any further, it turned into a sphere, and a
whole new universe came into view
I. Out of dark space, a
light emerges, and from it, A universe, Perfect and self-contained.
II. Soon, this universe
longs for self-reflection and so IT divides in order to witness itself.
III. A great polarity is
then manifest, an interplay of dualities, AND Each Take their turn to
support the whole.
IV. They hold each other
transfixed In Their cyclical movements, a creative tension resonating
between them, where there lies a desire to unite with the Other.
V. Their ultimate
convergence creates a space, A Creative void, out of which a third, New,
and utterly whole universe is born.
VI. In this way, from the
void came the one, and from the one, the many
an ever-expanding pulse
of being.
VII. It is a tale of that
which splits itself apart, to reunite, and to create itself anew, again
and again
